Sandpiper Bay Named 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Assoc

Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club in Sunset Beach, N.C. has been selected as 2010 Golf Course of the Year by the Myrtle Beach Area Golf Course Owners Association.

More than 100 Myrtle Beach area golf courses were considered for the award and ultimately two finalists were selected based on the following four criteria: exceptional quality of the golf course, exceptional quality of the ownership and management, outstanding contribution to the community and significant contribution to the game.

?We invested a lot time, money and good old fashioned hard work into making this award happen,? said Tim Tilma, general manager of Sandpiper Bay Golf & Country Club. ?We are committed to the future of Sandpiper Bay for all of our residents and visitors and this award is just one step in the overall master plan and vision we have for this community and its golf course. We hope everyone living in, or visiting the Myrtle Beach area comes to experience the best 27 holes of golf we have to offer.?

This summer, the Dan Maples-designed golf course concluded a three-year renovation project where all 27 greens were converted from bent grass to MiniVerde Bermuda grass.

MiniVerde is one of the newest and best of the hybrid Bermuda grasses that provide quality putting surfaces during the warm summers in the Carolinas.

Prior to being named 2010 Golf Course of the Year, Sandpiper Bay was named Best of Sunset Beach in the golf course category by the U.S. Commerce Association in 2008 and 2009.

The golf course has also hosted numerous golf events in recent years that raised nearly $30,000 for breast cancer research.

The club also promotes the game with a growing juniors program and also provides lessons and clinics for players of all skill levels.
