When the course was designed in 1974 by renowned golf architect Rees Jones, Arcadian Shores possessed one of the best layouts in Myrtle Beach. The track featured natural contours of the land, beautifully placed water hazards, and a more player friendly layout. Since then, the course has become cluttered with overbearing tree lines that limited the types of shots you could hit on the course. Thus, Arcadian Shores hasn’t been featured as a top 100 public course in any magazine since 1982.
However, the course is making a comeback with a recent renovation that began in the fall of 2013. Over 1,000 trees have been removed returning the layout to its original design. Upon completion, Arcadian Shores should be back to its old self and could make a prominent return to its rightful place as a top 100 public course.
One of the reasons Arcadian Shores is beloved by so many golfers is the way both 9’s start. The 1st and 10th holes are both par 5’s that are accessible to longer hitters. In fact, the front nine begins with a par 5, par 3, and then another par 5. Slightly odd but most players prefer this from the mundane all par 4 opening other courses in the area have.
The 2nd hole is the most picturesque with water surrounding the green on the right side. A large sand bunker lines the green to the left making this one of the most beautiful par 3 holes in all of Myrtle Beach.
Perhaps the most fun hole to play at Arcadian Shores is the par 4 13th, which features a large waterway that separates the fairway from the green. The 408 yard hole is regarded as the toughest holes on the course but with no fairway bunks to worry about, the 2nd shot really will decide your fate on this hole.
Overall, Arcadian Shores is 6,857 yards of a classic Rees Jones design with a lot of give and take. There are several holes that are easy birdie opportunities and there are several holes where making par will be a challenge.
Arcadian Shores also has some great practice areas including a driving range, chipping area, putting green, and a practice bunker allowing you to practice every aspect of your game before hitting the course.
