Cinco de Mayo is Spanish for "fifth of May". And is primarily known as a Mexican holiday celebrated in the state of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican Army's unlikely victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. The Battle of Puebla is important for at least two reasons. First, the Mexicans (4,000 soldiers) were considerably outnumbered, but none the less they defeated a much better-equipped French (8,000 soldiers) Army. Secondly, history reflects that since the Battle of Puebla no country in the Americas has been invaded by an Army from another continent.
