Cinco de Mayo at Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

It is time to get dressed Mexican Style – Cinco de Mayo is just around the corner, so dig out your ponchos and sombreros and head for the Strand. This festival celebrating Mexican culture and independence was once only celebrated in Mexico but has become a day of carnival and festivities in many parts of the United States, and especially in the many Mexican restaurants of Myrtle Beach. Here are some ideas for guests at Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts to think about for Cinco de Mayo.

The 16th annual Burrofest will be held at Fiesta del Burro Loco, a Mexican restaurant close to central Myrtle Beach, on May 5. The restaurant opens its doors at 11 a.m. for 12 hours of fun Mexican style. There’ll be live music from 1 p.m. onwards, and prizes for the funniest and most creative costumes as well as for the longest moustache. The restaurant is decorated Mexican style with sombreros, piñatas, and paintings, and is famous for its margaritas and frozen fruit-a-ritas. For those who can’t or haven’t grown a mustache, there is also the annual Stache Dash on May 4 which is a 5k race that starts at 9:30 a.m. All race participants get a moustache, t-shirt and a free beer at the festival. You can get more details on this on our Myrtle Beach events page.

Or if you’re feeling energetic you can also get yourself down to Carlos' n Charlie's at Celebrity Circle for the Carlos 'N' Charlie's 5K Fiesta Run. The race starts at 9 a.m. and is race number 2 in the Cumulus Media International Racing Series. Families can enjoy a more relaxed Family Fun Run, which starts an hour later. Kids between 5 and 14 who enjoy the game of golf are invited to participate in the U.S. Kids Golf Tournament at Indigo Creek Golf Club. Tee off times start at 1 p.m. This is described as competitive golf played from age-appropriate distances. Caddies are both allowed and encouraged.

Opera aficionados should book for a performance of Bizet’s Carmen by the Carolina Master Chorale under the direction of Timothy Koch. The opera stars international opera diva Kirstin Chavez in the title role. Carmen takes place in Seville, Spain rather than Mexico but as a feature of Latin culture it could still be a great and classy way to honor Cinco de Mayo.

Myrtle Beach has seen a wide variety of events take place in the past on Cinco de Mayo. Some are spontaneous and few are advertised beforehand. Make sure to keep an eye on our Myrtle Beach events page for any updated information. But no matter where you go you can expect to see plenty of street entertainment set to a backdrop of colorful dancing and music, and, of course, lots of Mexican food. Just get down to the Strand and follow the crowds.
