Backpack Buddies

Hunger doesn't take the weekend off.  Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts have taken an initiative in 2017 to support Help4Kids and their Backpack Buddies program, a Myrtle Beach and Horry County based program that aims to assist children in need.

Each week during the school year, the Backpack Buddies program provides a package of food for about 3,000 area children to take home on Friday so that they have food to eat over the weekend. They also continue their efforts during the summer, even when school is out.

Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts’ campaign to support the Backpack Buddies program will run through September 30th, and will allow guests the opportunity to make a small monetary donation at check in or at the time of booking. Monetary donations go a long way as it costs just $2.50 per week or $10 per month to feed one hungry child.

Donations of food are also being collected in our resort lobbys, and can include:

  • Vienna Sausage
  • Canned Ravioli
  • Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Mac & Cheese
  • Pop-Tarts
  • Ramen Noodles
  • Pudding Cups

Back-to-school items will also be accepted including:

  • Backpacks
  • Pencils
  • Marble Composition Notebooks
  • Three Inch 3-Ring Binders
  • Highlighters
  • Index Cards

Help4Kids Executive Director Barb Mains established the organization in 1989 to provide basic necessities to the children of the working poor in Horry County and later introduced the Backpack Buddies program in 2004.

Mains said "We have been very fortunate to have the community support our program, but in these difficult economic times we've had more children with need in our area and less individuals and businesses who are able to contribute to our program. We are excited to have Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts running the campaign to help raise both funds and awareness for our program."

The Backpack Buddies program and the Help4Kids organization is made up completely of volunteers. Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts are hoping to help the Backpack Buddies reach every child in need.

Matt Klugman of Vacation Myrtle Beach commented, "We are fortunate that we are able to support such a worthy cause like Backpack Buddies and we want to do whatever we can to assist their efforts. It is inspiring to see what Barb and her team do on their own time to help all of these children in need. It certainly was an easy decision by our ownership, management and staff to jump head first into this campaign to assist the Backpack Buddies program."

While all guests will be given the opportunity to make a donation at the time of booking and at check-in, all others who are interested in making a donation, however big or small, to the Help4Kids fundraising drive can call any Vacation Myrtle Beach resort or contact Help4Kids at 843-651-4310.
