Memorial Day in Myrtle Beach

By Megan Burke

Memorial Day is a day to commemorate those who gave their lives during war our country. In a patriotic town like Myrtle Beach there are a number of events that will be going on to commemorate and Memorial Day Myrtle Beachcelebrate this holiday. Here are just a few of the Memorial Day events happening in Myrtle Beach this year:

Brookgreen Gardens Red, White and Blue Salute to Veterans
From May 24 through May 26 Brookgreen Gardens will have flags marking the sculptures that are patriotic or were created by a veteran. Taking a walking tour through the gardens to appreciate these works is a unique way to have a Memorial Day themed outing. Plus with the VMB Card that all guests at VMB Resorts get when they check-in, you can get $1 off your garden admission.

Surfside Beach Memorial Day Cook Out and Service
The Town of Surfside Beach will be holding a Memorial Day Cook Out on the town pier from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 25. There will be lots of food, fun, and small-town good times so it is worth a trip south for sure. The town will also be holding a service on Memorial Day at Fuller Park at 2:30 p.m. to commemorate the day.

Myrtle Beach Memorial Day Parade and Picnic
On Saturday, May 24, the Memorial Day Parade will be heading down the streets of Myrtle Beach. The Grand Marshall of the parade this year is none other than Montel Williams, a U.S. Navy Veteran and well-known talk show host.  The parade will go down Ocean Boulevard from 25th Avenue North to 9th Avenue North so set up your chair along the boulevard to watch the floats, hear the music and celebrate.
The parade will end right near the old Pavilion Site, which is where the picnic and other festivities will take place. There will be children’s activities, military exhibits and of course, music. This year’s headlining band is the Andrew Thielen Big Band. In addition to all of that you can also see the Veteran’s Beach and ‘Stache Beach Bash, a beard and mustache competition open to all veterans, even women who can enter the Faux Contest, and meet Montel Williams. This will be the place to be in Myrtle Beach on May 24, so make sure you stop by for a guaranteed good time.

Myrtle Beach Memorial Day Ceremony
The city will also hold a “thank you” event for military men and women on Monday, May 26 at 11 a.m. This event will be held at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center Plaza and is open to the public.

These are just some of the things going on in Myrtle Beach around Memorial Day to celebrate the current and former armed forces members and to commemorate those who gave their lives in service.
