Inaugural 2018 Myrtle Mile

Inaugural Myrtle Mile Myrtle BeachGrab your running shoes and head downtown, the inaugural Myrtle Mile is right around the corner! This new fall event will take place on Saturday, November 3rd, 2018 is sure to be fun for the whole family, whether you are an elite runner or just looking for a fun way to stay fit with the fam.

 

A unique take on a group race, the Myrtle Mile is fast and flat. And, at only a mile in length, the race is a great opportunity for beginners and casual runners to get involved. Of course, there are also opportunities for running pros to get involved. The Myrtle Mile is offering a $25,000 prize for anyone that can beat the current world record for the fastest mile! How’s that for an incentive? Plus, following the race there will be a mini festival for all to enjoy. 

 

The full event is broken down into several race categories:

  • Fun Run - Ideal for families, kids, and casual joggers and walkers that just want to come and enjoy the scenery!
  • Kid’s Competitive - If your kiddo is ‘in it to win it’, register for the kid’s competitive category, which is open to runners aged 10 - 17.
  • Dog Jog - Do you want to enjoy a jog with your favorite furry friend? If so, the ‘dog jog’ category is for you!
  • Corporate - Created to encourage local businesses to participate, the ‘corporate’ group rate is available for teams of up to 10 participants.
  • Open - The ‘open’ category is perfect for the avid runner than can complete a sub-10 minute mile.
  • Competitive - A step above the rest, the ‘competitive’ category is great for runners that can complete a sub-8 minute mile.
  • Elite - Are you the fastest of the fast? To register as an elite runner, men must run a sub-4:10 minute mile and women must run a sub-4:45 minute mile.

 

RunningThe ‘competitive’ and ‘elite’ groups will be competing for generous prizes, including the previously mentioned bonus!

  • First Place - $1,250
  • Second Place - $700
  • Third Place - $300

 

Awards will be given to the top male and female winners for a total of 6 cash prizes!

 

To qualify for the bonus $25,000, a runner must beat the current world record for the fastest mile. So, what is the current world record? The fastest recorded male is Hicham Guerrouj at 3:43 and Svetlana Masterkova with 4:12. Now that’s impressive! Think you can beat it?

 

The race will start at 24th Avenue North and end at 9th Avenue North, right in the heart of downtown Myrtle Beach. The course will run right along Ocean Boulevard, providing great evening views of the beach and all of the excitement of the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk.

 

Speaking of ‘evening’, the time of this race is another fun differentiator! The event kicks off at 6 p.m. and is followed by a fun, family-friendly festival downtown. The entire event will run from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

 

Of course, there will be plenty to do after the race! If you’re hungry, try one of the many mouthwatering restaurants along the bustling Boardwalk. ART Burger Sushi Bar, Dirty Don’s Oyster Bar & Grill, Moe Moons and Ocean Front Bar & Grill are all great nearby options for ocean views and diverse menus. If you’re up for a bit of a walk, check out RipTydz, Tin Roof, or Second Avenue Pier, which offer great food, great drinks, and live music.

 

From an entertainment perspective, you won’t have to travel far for fantastic family options. The famous Myrtle Beach SkyWheel is located right along the Boardwalk and is hard to miss! Reward your efforts with a seat in a climate-controlled gondola and take in spectacular views of the boulevard. Or, check out one of the attractions along the main strip, like the Ripley’s Museum, Myrtle Beach Zipline Adventure, thrill rides, and nostalgic arcades - to name a few.

 

The Myrtle Mile promises to be a fun event for visitors and locals alike! Runners of all ages and experience levels will feel right at home along the scenic course and warm, welcoming atmosphere.
