September 11 events in Myrtle Beach

Unlike 2011, which marked the 10th anniversary of 9-11, the memorial events planned for 2012 are a bit less numerous. There are, however, a handful of events that visitors to Myrtle Beach resorts might like to participate in while enjoying their September trip to the area.

The Dead Dog Saloon in Murrells Inlet is to host two events, one of which will be of particular interest to golfers. Starting at 7.30 a.m. is the Inaugural Local Heroes Benefit Golf Tournament, which is planned to be an annual event. The tournament will be played at the Island Green Country Club, and proceeds will go to local police and fire departments, and to other local groups. The second event hosted by this restaurant is the 11th annual local heroes’ benefit. With the doors opening at 10.00 a.m. and the music starting at 11.00 a.m., the event will feature no less than 12 bands. There will be a free All American Buffet all day and all night, and like the golf tournament, all proceeds will benefit local police and fire departments. The event also features live auctions, silent auctions and 50/50 drawings.

A little closer to more Vacation Myrtle Beach hotels is the 9-11 Candlelight Memorial Vigil organized by the North Myrtle Beach Lions Club. The early part of the day will see visitors to the city being welcomed by American flags being waved from many of the city’s bridges. The main ceremony will commence at 7.00 p.m. in the Horseshoe, which is located at the end of Main Street. The motorcycles of Rolling Thunder will ride into the event to publicize the MIA and POW issues. These will be followed by a number of color guards and the presentation of a memorial wreath for all fallen Americans by the North Myrtle Beach Public Safety and Fire Department. Everyone will then proceed to the beach for a 21-gun salute, the lighting of candles and Taps. The wreath will then be taken out to sea.

There are likely other smaller events around the area so be sure to ask at the front desk or online on the Myrtle Beach events page.
