Three Best Holes: Myrtlewood’s Palmetto Course

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

Located in the heart of Myrtle Beach, Myrtlewood’s Palmetto course is perfect for any group of golfers looking for a leisurely fun round on a course that gives more than it takes.  With wide, gently sloping fairways, Palmetto provides golfers with plenty of shot-making opportunities.

Bunkers are well placed but aren’t pinched up against the fairways swallowing every slightly errant shot. The rough length is playable and will often give players a favorable lie, as they scramble for par.  The greens undulate from back to front, mostly but still maintain an acceptable level of speed.  Overall, Myrtlewood is an incredibly fun golf course to play.

However, like most scenic courses along the Grand Strand, there are several holes that you’ll vividly recount in substantial detail while enjoying a post round beverage in a newly remodeled clubhouse and pro shop.  Below, we’ve listed our three favorite holes at Myrtlewood’s Palmetto course.

Par 3 7th Hole

Playing at 173 yards from the back tees, the 7th acts tougher than it plays.  An hourglass fairway sits just shy of the green, giving players the option of taking the lake to the right completely out of play.  However, players confident in their mid-iron game can take aim at a slightly undulated green that slopes gently from front to back.  A well-struck tee shot will reward players with a very makeable birdie putt while anything to the right will end up wet.

Par 4 14th Hole

The 14th isn’t the most difficult hole on the course but it may provide players with their most cringe-worthy 2nd shot of the round.  A simple tee-shot on this 391 yard hole is needed to set up a likely mid-iron in to a well-guarded green.  With water running the entire length of the hole, the green is heavily guarded to the right with a sprawling bunker designed to catch anything that falls short and to the left.  The safest course of action would be to lay-up on your 2nd shot and chip it in close for a good look at par.

Par 4 18th Hole

Introduced to the waterway on the difficult par 3 17th, players will have to do their best to keep their tee shot straight on this 468 yard finishing hole.  Even missing to the right isn’t a bad place to be.  With three deep bunkers surrounding the 18th green, this hole will make you work on every shot you hit.  The good news here is that a deeper pin placement allows for shorter shots to funnel closer to the hole.  Walking away with a par here will leave you feeling relieved as you make your march back to the 19th hole.
