What’s Most Important in a Golf Course?

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

Think of the most majestic, beautiful, and serene golf course you can imagine then ask yourself, what’s most important in a golf course?  The majority of players will come back with the same answer of exquisite grooming or perhaps ocean views, similar to what we see whenever the PGA tour heads to Pebble Beach out in California.  But, to us there’s more to a golf course than what meets the eye.  So, here’s a list of what we find most important in a golf course.

Well-Groomed Greens with Perfect Speed

How often have you played a course and noticed that the greens aren’t well-kept?  For golf course management companies, this is the one area of the course that they have to get right.  Greens must be well-kept or players will take their talents elsewhere.  However, there are some greens that are impeccably well-kept but play too fast or too slow for the average player.  This can also be a turnoff for most golfers.  That’s why having well-groomed greens that run at the perfect speed is important for a golf course.

Playable Sand Traps

Compact sand that hasn’t been raked may be one of the biggest problems golfers encounter in regards to poor course management.  We’ve all tried to hit a ball out of a bunker with hard sand that has been clumped together.  Keeping bunkers as obstacles is a good thing but it’s important to keep them playable, especially around the green.

Playable Layout

Some courses advertise a scenic layout but with tee boxes over 100 yards away from the previous greens, these distances slow down the pace of play.  After all, having players play faster opens the opportunity for multiple rounds in one day where as its tough for a foursome to explain spending another five hours on the golf course after a slow round.  Layout is important not only for the golfing experience but from a business perspective.  Having a layout that’s fun yet quick to play is very important.

Hospitality and Service

For most, service at a particular course can make or break an experience.  The better a course takes care of problems the better their ‘rep’ is going to be amongst those who play it.  Of course, for some, there’s only a limited amount of engagement between staff and player depending on how much time you spend in the clubhouse.  But courses that go above and beyond in regards to hospitality are those who will continue to thrive well into the future.
