2014 in Myrtle Beach: A Year in Review

2014 has been a busy year in Myrtle Beach! Check our annual Year in Review roundup and catch up on all of the latest Myrtle Beach news:

“Back Gate” Overpass Complete – Anyone who has been to the Grand Strand over the past few years is familiar with the construction that has been going on along Highway 17 and Farrow Parkway. This project has taken over three long years to come together but is finally complete! Now, highway travelers will have no problem getting through this area while the traffic going to and from Market Common with a better flow.

Projects to look out for in 2015 include an overpass project along the south end of Highway 17 in Surfside Beach and a widening project along Highway 707 between Conway and Murrells Inlet.

Hollywood Wax Museum – This new Myrtle Beach attraction is hard to miss! Located right across from the popular Broadway at the Beach complex, the new Hollywood Wax Museum & Entertainment Center is actually three different attractions all under one roof. As one might guess, the wax museum is the main draw of this entertainment center. Guests can get up close and personal with famous idols like Johnny Depp, Elvis Presley, and Michael Jackson. Broadway Grand Prix – Another recent addition to the Myrtle Beach attractions lineup is the newly revamped Broadway Grand Prix. Formerly the NASCAR SpeedPark, this outdoor go-kart track went through several renovations before re-opening under the new name and management. The facility now includes six unique tracks for guests of all ages, carnival rides and a dedicated kids’ area, mini-golf, an on-site arcade, a rock climbing wall, and thrill rides. New Restaurants – The Myrtle Beach area saw several changes in the restaurant area. Notable closings include Tommy Bahama’s at Market Common, Nibil’s Family Restaurant along Highway 17, Fuego’s Mexican Grill in Murrells Inlet, Gem City Pizza in downtown Myrtle Beach, Myrtle Beach Restaurantsand JD’s Steakhouse & Pasta in Pawley’s Island. But, as old dining facilities close, others open and offer new, exciting choices. New area restaurants include:

• Johnny D’s Waffle House – Breakfast
• Flaming Asian Bistro - Asian
• Art Burger Sushi Bar – Burgers & Sushi

Crown Reef Resort Opens Indoor Water Park – Crown Reef Resort, one of Myrtle Beach’s premier oceanfront resorts, opened a brand new indoor water park last summer. This new top-of-the-line facility includes two water slides, the “EXPLOSION Tube Slide” and the “TWISTER Water Park in Myrtle BeachBody Slide”, both of which are enclosed and heated for year round use. The slides empty into the seasonally enclosed indoor water park facility which includes a smaller “KIDZ Twitster” slide and water fun play area. North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex – The new North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex has been a highly anticipated and welcomed area addition. The new state-of-the-art facility offers 27-acres of space packed with baseball / softball fields, soccer fields, three spacious playgrounds, an amphitheater, picnic areas, and a dog park. Additionally, the indoor portion of the facility is ideal for hosting area events throughout the year. Perfect for both visitors and locals, this new sports complex is a perfect place to enjoy time with family and friends.
Myrtle Beach Airport Adds More Flights – Guests traveling to the Myrtle Beach area will have more choices than ever before as the local airport expands and adds more flight choices. Additions include daily flights from Cleveland through Spirit airlines from the spring through fall and several new destination additions like Orlando, Ft. Lauderdale, Lexington, and Los Angeles.
