Best Things To Do in Conway

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

The City of Conway is located on the Waccamaw River 14 miles inland from Myrtle Beach along Route 501. The city has a population of a little over 17,000 so visitors to Vacation Myrtle Beach resorts wanting a change from the hustle and bustle of the Strand often take the short drive to the relatively laid back Conway for a different atmosphere.  Here are some of the attractions you’ll find in the city:

Conway's downtown region has been rejuvenated with many shops, restaurants and bistros over recent years. Two of the main highlights of the renovation are the Riverwalk and the Marina. The Riverwalk is a raised boardwalk built along the banks of the Waccamaw River where it runs through the center of the city. It is dotted with fine dining restaurants and is well worth a visit.

The Conway’s Downtown Alive organization runs an “Alive after Five” session on the first Thursday of every month. The agenda of this session varies from month to month. As an example, it can start with a cruise-in of the Chicora Car Club followed by Elvis impersonator David Chaney on stage. The venues for this get together may change from month to month, so should be checked on their website.

If you are interested in local history make your way to the Horry County Museum. The museum is currently housed in a converted Post Office bordering the historic Downtown District, but will soon relocate to the Burroughs School, which is currently being renovated. The central theme of the exhibits shows how the indigenous inhabitants, from prehistoric times right up to the present day, have adapted to local environmental conditions. There are numerous photographs and artifacts, including household items, farming implements and tools, items from an historic country store, local crafts and clothing. The historic district includes more than 30 sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Every Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. you can catch the Waccamaw Market Cooperative’s Farmers’ Market. This is held in the historic downtown district at 217 Laurel Street. In order to carry the Waccamaw Grown™ label, fruit, vegetables and other produce must comply with the standards set by the cooperative. Buying produce carrying this label from the farmers’ market guarantees freshness, flavor, and nutrition, as well as helping to improve the local economy.

If you are an equestrian aficionado back home, and are yearning to get back into the saddle, make your way to M & K Ranch. The horses at M & K Ranch are loved and this is a must for anyone interested in horseback riding. A ride here is not your typical follow the leader, walk or trot.  M & K Ranch is located just outside Conway in Aynor.

So next time you’re in Myrtle Beach looking for something different to do, consider taking the short drive over to Conway, closest from the Palms Resort or hotel BLUE and Captain’s Quarters as you can see on the Myrtle Beach resorts map.
