Myrtle Beach First Friday Artwalks

By Megan Burke

Paintbrushes and PaintMyrtle Beach is known for Calabash-style seafood, endless coastlines, and offering more putt-putt courses per capita than any other city along the east coast. Visitors flock to our sandy shores each year to take advantage of our family-friendly entertainment and pristine beaches.

Of course, there are still a few hidden gems that many visitors haven’t discovered yet. If you’re looking to “do as the locals do” during your trip to Myrtle Beach, schedule a trip during the beginning of the month and pencil in the “First Friday Artwalk” event.

As the name suggests, the new Artwalk event takes place during the first Friday of each month and is rapidly growing in popularity. Perfect for families, couples, and groups, the Artwalk celebrates the Grand Strand’s local art scene with a bustling afternoon event.

The event takes place in the historic “Five Points” district of downtown Myrtle Beach, with art stops along Broadway Street and Main Street. Organized by local photographer, Carl Kerridge, the event was created to promote and enrich the local art community and to bring life to the vibrant downtown area.

The walk currently includes 13 stops, a mix of local galleries and restaurants. Gallery owners showcase their latest and greatest creations and are on-site to answer questions and chat with curious visitors. Popular stops include William H. Miller Studio and Fine Art, The Howard Gallery, and Tomtom Studio - to name a few.

Downtown restaurants are also included in the fun and are encouraged to offer food and drink specials during the event. Many do, with specialty drinks and appetizer deals throughout the walk. The combination of art events and food and drink specials makes it easy to mix and mingle with friends and family downtown. And, if you’re having a good time, there’s always plenty of places to keep the party rolling. Some restaurants host signature “after party” events to entice visitors to stay and play downtown.

Stick to the “art” theme and enjoy a nightcap and a few snacks at ART Burger Sushi Bar, a Boardwalk staple. Or, check out some of the new Boardwalk hot spots, like RipTydz or Tin Roof, both of which offer tasty drinks and live music throughout the summer. If you want to catch an amazing beach sunset, grab a seat on the famous Myrtle Beach SkyWheel, which offers panoramic views of the coastline and cityscape. Or, enjoy a cozy walk along the beach or on the Second Avenue Pier to wind down while you take in the waves. No matter what you’re in the mood for, there’s plenty to enjoy downtown after the Artwalk.

The Artwalks take place on the first Friday of each month in downtown Myrtle Beach from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. You can check out the event Facebook page for more information: https://www.facebook.com/MBArtWalks/
