Road Trip Hack: Car Prep

Packing & Prepping Your Vehicle

There are lots of things that you can do to make the packing part of your road trip a little bit easier:

  1. Check your oil, air tire pressure, window washer fluid and anything else before you leave so you won’t have to stop along the way. Or, take your car to a mechanic for a multi-point inspection before you hit the road.
  2. If you live in a hot climate, try to park your car in the shade the night before and crack your windows if you can. That way your car will be a little more bearable when you leave in the morning.
  3. Pack whatever you can the night before. Then you can just grab the remaining few items, such as your cooler, in the morning and get an early start.
  4. Be sure to check that you have all the basics in your car before you leave including a spare tire, just in case.
  5. Make sure you have your emergency roadside assistance information handy, including the phone number and account number, as a precaution. Whether you have AAA, roadside assistance through your insurance or from where you purchased your car, you do not want to have to dig for this information if you do need it.

Road Trip Hack: Packing Cubes

Packing Cubes

Packing cubes are the perfect way to stay organized during your road trip. Whether you purchase a set of packing cubes or use gallon bags to organizer your things, it will prove to be a time saver. There are a few methods of using packing cubes:

  1. One option is to separate by item; for example, one cube can contain socks, another can contain t-shirts and another shorts.
  2. Or, you can organize by outfit, making it easy to just grab a cube for the day. This is especially useful if you are on a multi-day road trip and need to pull stuff out for just one night. You can put your whole family’s outfits for the next day in a single cube.

Road Trip Hack: Car Sickness Road Trip Kit How-To

Car-Sickness Kit

Making a read-to-go cart sickness kit is so easy to do. If you have a child (or adult!) prone to car-sickness or if you just want to play it safe, you can put together this easy kit:

  1. Motion sickness medication – to ease an upset stomach
  2. Disinfecting wipes and paper towel sheets – to clean up surfaces after the fact
  3. Baby wipes or hand wipes – to clean their face or any other surfaces
  4. Hand sanitizer – to sanitize their hands, and yours
  5. Sports drink or water bottle – to rehydrate after
  6. Easily digestible snack – to fill up their empty stomach
  7. Garbage bags – for any dirty clothes or other messes
  8. 2 Sealable plastic bags – one to use for when your child is sick; it can be closed up, sealed and thrown out when you reach a garbage can at your next stop and the second you can use to store all of your car sickness kit items.

Have this kit packed up and ready to go for your next road trip!

Road Trip Hack: Phone Prep

Get Your Phone Ready

Prior to leaving for your road trip be sure that your phone is ready too!

  1. Download your favorite podcast or audio book before leaving (or try something new!). This way you won’t have to worry about using your data on the road or having trouble finding a strong enough signal.
  2. Pack a car charger or fully-charged portable charger if you don’t have a USB outlet in your vehicle. There is nothing worse than having a dead phone on your long road trip.
  3. Download apps before you leave that can help with your trip. Apps including directional options like Waze and parking apps such as Parkopedia and GasBuddy to help you find the best nearby gas prices are great resources.

Road Trip Hack: Baby Wipes

Pack Baby Wipes

Baby wipes are not just for babies anymore! This simple product can work wonders on your road trip. Spill something sticky? Need to wipe your hands off after a meal on-the-go? No worries! Just grab a baby wipe for quick clean-up while in route. Pro-tip: Get the unscented type to avoid strong scents trapped in your vehicle and pair with hand sanitizer after for a germ-free clean-up.

Road Trip Hack: Cookie Tray

Cookie Tray for Crafts

If your child likes to color or play games in the car, having a cookie tray as a lap-desk can help keep everything contained like crayons, their coloring books and other items.

Road Trip Hack: D-Rings

D-Rings for Hanging Bags

D-Rings, which can be found in the hardware section at a store are a great handy item to bring on your road trip. Simply attach it to the back of your head rest for an easy place to hang your purse, a craft bag or anything else with a strap that you want easy access to.

Road Trip Hack: Plastic Container for Dice Games

Plastic Container for Dice

If you like to play games that involve dice on your road trip, be sure to bring a small clear plastic container with a lid on it. That way you can “roll” your dice right in the container and not worry about losing them in the car.

Road Trip Hack: Cereal Container for a Garbage Can

Cereal Container as a Garbage Can

Figuring out the best way to contain trash in the car seems to be a non-stop challenge. But, we’ve found a great solution for you. A pourable cereal container (with a lid that has an opening on the top that can be closed) is a great option. Simply load a grocery bag into your container and snap on the lid. Trash can be disposed of through the hole in the top. The sealed container will also be spill proof!

Road Trip Hack: Hand Sanitizer and Toilet Paper

Toilet Paper & Hand Sanitizer

There is nothing worse than being on a long road trip, stopping to use a restroom at a rest stop and finding out they are out of the essentials. Pack one roll of toilet paper and hand sanitizer on your road trip to make sure you don’t get stuck in this scenario.
