Samantha’s Guide to Broadway at the Beach

By Samantha Norton

Whether you want to stop in or spend the day at Broadway at the Beach you are going to find a ton of things to do! The best part is many of restaurants, shops and attractions are VMB partners and offer discounts when you present your VMB card. I’m going to talk about a few of my favorites, but trust me you need multiple visits to Broadway at the Beach to experience all it has to offer.

There are so many places to choose from to eat. I personally love the variety. One of my favorite things to do is to do an “appetizer crawl” kind of like a pub crawl; you go from place to place and order an appetizer at each stop. The great way to do it is to look up what restaurants have happy hour and most have a great appetizer menu along with their happy hour.

Some of my favorites are Liberty’s Steak House and Brewery, Liberty’s has happy hour from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and they have the best deep fried pimento cheese balls around, pair that with a four dollar glass of Liberty Creek cabernet and you are in yum town! (subject to change)

Another stop I absolutely have to make is at Chuck and Ducks Sports Grill. New to Broadway at the Beach, you can catch your team on one of the fifty 50” flat screens or if you are lucky, your team or sporting event might even be on the extra big screen made up of nine 50” flat screens! If you stop into Chuck and Ducks you must try their deep fried green beans with their signature boom boom sauce. This tasty fried treat will keep you coming back; I know I have to give myself a pep talk every time I go to Broadway… “I will not have the deep fried green beans! I will not!” this is typically to no avail. I have to have them! Chuck and Ducks runs happy hour 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.  (subject to change)

My other must stop is King Kong Sushi. I don’t typically do an appetizer there, but if you are looking for reasonably priced sushi and unique flavors of saki, this is the place. I highly recommend the Tuna Mania roll.

Broadway offers many great attractions located adjacent to one another so there’s no reason to worry about moving your car. If you are looking something take all ages of kids to, hit the Pavilion Nostalgia Park. “Nostalgia” refers to all of the classic carnivalesque rides you can find there. Enjoy the Teacup ride at Disney World? Stop by the Pavilion Nostalgia Park and take a ride on their version.

Another great family stop is Wonderworks. Wonderworks combine education and entertainment in over 100 exhibits that are all hands-on. You can even virtually control and land a NASA shuttle! How cool is that?

The one attraction I consider a must see is Ripley’s Aquarium. Your kids will be amazed by the colorful display of sea life and awed by the 750,000 gallon all around shark tank you get to walk under and through!

There is also plenty of nightlife at Broadway at the Beach. Crocodile Rocks is a dueling piano bar that is so fun you will never want to leave! The piano players are talented singers who could double as comedians, and play requests from the crowd all night.

Fat Tuesdays is full bar specializing in daiquiris. If you are looking for a cool down this is definitely a stop you should make. You will be refreshed while you lulled into relaxation.

Carolina Comedy Club features well known comedians and sets the atmosphere for a great night.

With all that being said let me get to Broadways most attractive feature, shopping! Every woman I know loves to shop, and I’m not the exception. It would be hard to cover every shop and store, so here are a few notables.

S.C. Jewelers features unique jewelry that you will be hard pressed to find anywhere else at very reasonable prices.

Boardwalk Winery combines wine tasting with kitschy products and accessories, like an owl wine cork holder or aprons with inappropriate sayings on them. I am a sucker for kitschy items and for that matter I am a sucker for seven wine tastings for three dollars. (subject to change)

My last stop is to Pepper Palace. You get to taste test some of the hottest sauces in the world! You can also buy hundreds of varieties of sauces, salsas and pretty much anything else you can imagine hot and peppery. My recommendation is Tabasco infused olives.

What are you waiting for I know you are dying to get to Broadway at the Beach and try some of these out. I sure made myself hungry and thirsty! Don’t forget to pack your VMB card and get all the discounts you can!
