The Best Finishing Holes in Myrtle Beach

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

In sports, finishing is really the name of the game.  There’s something unique or divine about that last moment of a game or the last hole on a golf course.  The 18th hole in Majors on the PGA Tour has broken many hearts and yielded immortality to mere mortals.  How you finish on the last hole can certainly make or break around.

Of course, for many Myrtle Beach golfers, they won’t have to hit a tough 5-iron into a well surrounded green with thousands of on-lookers watching their shot.  But, the final hole is crucial to shooting a good score and perhaps sinking a birdie that you’ll tell all of your friends back home about.

With so many great options to choose from, narrowing down the best finishing holes in Myrtle Beach was a chore.  But, we’ve narrowed it down to five of our favorites.  If you disagree with any of our choices then please let us know in the comments below.

Par 4 – Prestwick Golf Course

Designed by Pete & P.B. Dye, Prestwick’s 18th hole is a 441-yard masterpiece.  A pond sits just beyond a fairway long sand bunker on the right side of the hole while four large pot punkers sit equally spaced down the left.  Getting off the tee with an accurate drive is crucial to making par on this difficult hole.  The 2nd shot is easier than the first with only water to the right of the green and a small greenside bunker to the left to worry about.  Even coming up short isn’t the worst thing especially if there’s a back pin position.  Making par on this beautiful hole is worth celebrating.

Par 3 – Eagle Nest Golf Club

Rarely do you encounter a par 3 finish to a round, which is why Eagle Nest finishing hole makes our list.  Measuring in at only 185 yards from the back tees, this par 3 looks tamer on the scorecard than it plays in person.  A large pond separates the tee from the green.  Four large pot bunkers surround the green making this a difficult hole to miss on.  With no layup area, this par 3 will test your mid-iron game to the max.  A good tee shot and you could escape with a birdie but miss the green to the left or short and you’re guaranteed a bogey.

Par 5 – River Club Golf Course

Measuring in at 518 yards from the tips, River Club’s finishing hole mimics that of the 18th at Pebble Beach.  A long fairway nestles against a large pond to the left allowing golfers to potentially go at this green in two with an accurate tee shot.  Of course, the risk reward approach to this hole could make or break your round.  Those who play it conservatively should have a reasonable chip or flop shot into the green with a chance at birdie forthcoming.  Those who risk it could end up making a bogey or worse.

Par 4 – Caledonia Golf Club

Built as a par 4, this hole is really a par 3 built with an extra shot attached.  The tee shot is not overly terrifying although the large lake that separates the fairway from the green is noticeable from the tee box and can come into play if one does not steer the ball to the left on this hole.  The good news is besides a few trees, there’s no real trouble down the left side of the fairway.  Even if the tee shot winds up in the rough, it’s still playable.  Where this hole earns its fame is the 2nd shot you’re left with.  A large 60 yard gap separates players from a well guarded green.  A good tee shot will leave the average player about 120 yards to the flag, making this approach a real test for one’s short iron game.  If there is one place to miss on this hole it’s left and long.  It may not leave you with a great opportunity at par but your ball will be dry and depending on the flag’s location, the chip is makeable.

Par 4 – Wachesaw East Plantation Golf Course

Last on our list is an underrated finishing hole that forces golfers to hit an uncomfortable mid-iron approach shot into a well guarded green.  Wachesaw East’s 18th hole measures in at 430 yards from the tips.  However, the unique feature on this hole is the fact that the fairway ends well over 115 yards from the flag.  With several large trees to the right and a large greenside sand bunker encompassing well over 50% of the green to the left, there’s little room for an inaccurate 2nd shot here.  Water also comes into play if a ball is pulled short and left.  With so many factors to take into account when lining up your final iron shot for the day, this little known 18th hole does enough to earn a spot on this list.
