Over $45k raised for prostate cancer research

By Vacation Myrtle Beach
The 3rd annual Know Your Score Links & Laughs Golf Tournament and Gala raised more than $45,000 this past weekend for prostate cancer research.

The events responsible for raising the funds included a celebrity golf tournament at Long Bay Club and a comedy show at Kingston Plantation.

Proceeds from the events raised money for the Know Your Score campaign to benefit ZERO ? The Project to End Prostate Cancer.

"We could not have asked for a better weekend," said Heath Carter, director of new market development for Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday. "We wish to thank everyone who participated in making the Links and Laughs event such a huge success. We could not do it without all of the players, sponsors and celebrities who gave of their time to support such a great cause. Our goal is to end prostate cancer in our lifetime and we are one step closer to that after this weekend."

Celebrities playing in the tournament included former NFL great Sterling Sharpe, former major league baseball player Tony Womack, former Boston Celtics great and 11-time NBA champion Sam Jones, former heavyweight boxing champion James "Bonecrusher" Smith, NBA player Brevin Knight and College of Charleston head basketball coach Bobby Cremins.

The evening events at Kingston Plantation featured a silent auction, raffle prizes for extravagant prizes including an all-expenses paid trip to South Africa and an entertaining comedy show.

The comedy show featured the talents of comics Karen Mills, "Mutzie" a.k.a. Daniel Forestier and Bobby Collins.

Emmy award-winning essayist and commentator for Turner Sports, Jim Huber, is the 2010 national spokesperson for the Know Your Score Fight Prostate Cancer campaign.

Huber has been spreading awareness about prostate cancer research and the importance of regular screening through national and regional interviews and served as host for the weekend events.

"I'm honored to be a part of something so special that can make such a huge difference in men's lives," said Huber. "The Myrtle Beach community has been enormously supportive of the Know Your Score Fight Prostate Cancer campaign. My link to the disease comes through my father who was diagnosed, but survived. So, I personally know the importance of 'knowing your score.' Thank you to everyone who made the weekend such a big success. And we ask that people continue to support this worthwhile cause."

Saturday's captain's choice format golf tournament was won by the team from Fuel Interactive with a score of 19-under.

The Myrtle Beach Golf Course Owners Association finished second and Atlantic Golf Promotions broke a tie for third place by winning a scorecard playoff.

Since April of 2008, Myrtle Beach Golf Holiday has joined forces with ZERO and supported the annual campaign to fight prostate cancer.

The Know Your Score campaign slogan refers to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test given to men 50 years of age or older to help detect prostate cancer.

A low score on the PSA test is good news and is the best screening tool currently available when used with the physical prostate exam, according to ZERO.

As a result of the Links & Laughs event charity efforts, the annual goal of raising $70,000 for the Know Your Score campaign to benefit ZERO ? The Project to End Prostate Cancer has nearly been reached.

The annual goal is expected to be exceeded with fundraising events scheduled at the "World's Largest 19th Hole" at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center as part of this week's 27th annual GOLF.com World Amateur Handicap Championship, August 30-September 3.

Each night at the 19th Hole, one lucky tournament participant will win a raffle for the opportunity to play pool against World 9-Ball champion, Ewa Laurance. I

If the golfer defeats Laurance in billiards, that person will win free entry into the 2011 World Am.

Also, proceeds from closest-to-the-pin contests during World Am and at the 19th Hole golf simulator will benefit the Know Your Score campaign. Later this fall, numerous Myrtle Beach area golf courses will participate in closest-to-the-pin contests with proceeds benefitting the Know Your Score.
