By Megan Burke

Brookgreen Gardens Festival of LightsSummer is in full swing across the Grand Strand and the gardens are in full bloom at Brookgreen. The area’s premier outdoor attraction has a brand-new festival in store for the 2018 season and you won’t want to miss out on the fun!

For those unfamiliar, Brookgreen Gardens is state’s only outdoor sculpture garden, a true hidden Myrtle Beach gem. Nestled along the south end of the strand between Murrells Inlet and Pawleys Island, Brookgreen Gardens boasts over 500 acres of lush garden space with more than 50 unique, hand-made sculptures scattered throughout.

An enjoyable and off-the-beaten-path attraction for guests of all ages, Brookgreen is the perfect option when you need a break from the salt and the sand. The outdoor attraction features a wide array of entertainment options for guests of any age, with plenty of shaded spots and seating areas to keep cool during the summer months.

The Brookgreen Gardens experience includes self-guided tours of the entire grounds, with options to add on a visit to the Lowcountry Zoo, a marine boat tour along the winding Waccamaw River, and attendance to any of the many exciting events that the venue hosts throughout the year. The grounds also offer several dining options, including The Pavilion Restaurant, The Courtyard Cafe, and Old Kitchen, each of which offers affordable, tasty refreshments to keep you fueled for outdoor adventures. And, you can stop off at the gift shop on the way out to snag a one-of-a-kind beach souvenir.

This summer, Brookgreen is proud to host the ‘Summer Lights Festival’, which will take place each Wednesday through Saturday from May 24th through August 19th. The event takes place in the Lowcountry Zoo area from 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm.

Brookgreen Gardens Festival of Lights 2018Inspired by Chinese craftsmen and the ancient tradition of Chinese Lantern Festivals, the Summer Lights Festival will feature larger-than-life silk lantern sculpture scattered throughout the native animal exhibits. These breathtaking light sculptures are truly a sight to be seen and will add an enchanting element to the already magical gardens. The entire festival light trail is approximately one mile in length and there are plenty of spots to stop and enjoy the scenery for guests that need a short break.

The festival will also include a variety of activities for families, including live entertainment, Chinese paper arts and crafts, ancient horoscopes, storytelling and history lessons, and more. There will also be several local food truck vendors on-site with several dinner and snack options in case you get hungry. There will also be adult beverages available for parents and grandparents (or other guests of age) to enjoy during the event.

Tickets for this captivating family festival are only $20 for adults, $12 for children ages 4-12, and free for children under 3. Brookgreen Gardens members will receive a $5 discount on the full ticket price.

Please note that space is limited for the festival and advance ticket purchase is required. Call (843) 235-6000 for more information or for tickets.
