Located south of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, True Blue isn’t the first course you think of when you think about Myrtle Beach golf. However, that may change once you play the course. True Blue is a pristine coastal course that was built, like so many courses in the area, on an old rice plantation. Gently sloping fairways, numerous water hazards, and plenty of beautiful South Carolina scenic views make this one of the top courses in Myrtle Beach.
Like all golf courses, several holes are going to stand out more than others. True Blue is no different in that they have a handful of holes that were exceptionally designed and crafted by head golf architect Mike Strantz.
Below, we’ve listed our three favorite holes from this beautiful low-country course.
Hole #3 – Par 3
From the back tees, this par 3 is a monster at 190 yards but for the casual golfer, the white tees play at a manageable 141 yard distance. Built similarly to the 17th at Sawgrass, the 3rd hole features an island green surrounded by a man-made lake. The hourglass green is unique and provides an extra level of difficulty to the hole. Going long does give you a better chance of staying dry, especially since a front pin location is very common on this hole. However, the narrow portion of the green is very difficult to read almost assuring a bogey if it lands on the back of the green. A par here is a worthy score.
Hole #4 – Par 5
Golfers who can draw the ball off the tee will have a huge advantage on this 548 yard par 5, especially, with water encasing this hole on the left. While the drive is intimidating, the length of this hole plays perfectly for those who cannot make the green in two. In fact, the best strategy is to hit a wood or a hybrid 3-iron off the tee and then hit a mid-iron to within 100 yards of the green. From there, the water will have been all but removed from the hole and the player will still have an excellent shot at birdie or par.
Hole #17 – Par 4
The 18th hole at True Blue is one of the most picturesque finishing holes along the Grand Strand. But, the 17th hole is a far more challenging hole, as proven by its #2 handicap ranking on the scorecard. The 17th is a 449 yard par 4 that plays as a slight dogleg right. The large landing area makes this hole very driver friendly off the tee but there’s little room for error if you push the ball right. A large pond engulfs this hole down the right side and often swallows up any errant tee shot. Play this hole well and you’ll have a good chance at posting back to back birdies with the shorter par 4 18th hole remaining.
