Course Spotlight: Prestwick Golf Course

By Vacation Myrtle Beach

Hidden from view off route 544 in Myrtle Beach near Surfside Beach, Prestwick Golf Course features one of the best layouts at the beach.  The challenging Pete and P.B. Dye design is one sure to impress with numerous holes that could be considered for the best 18 holes along the Grand Strand.

Your round will begin with a medium length par 4 with a wide sandy area running down the right side of an extremely undulated fairway.  Playing at less than 380 yards from the white tees, the first hole may be one of the best chances for birdie on the entire front nine.  Getting off to a good start is crucial to shooting a good score on the course.

Another reason getting off to a good start is crucial is because the 2nd hole is a monstrous par 4 and worthy of the 1 handicap it’s given on the scorecard.  At 448 yards from the tips, there’s no laying up here as an accurate tee shot is necessary to give yourself a good look at a narrow green.  Par or better is a great score on this hole.  Even a bogey won’t ruin your round in most cases.

Even the par 3 holes at Prestwick are challenging to just about every level of golfer.  The 8th hole is a 246 yard par 3 from the back tees but plays a manageable 193 from the whites.  With no trouble in front of the green, playing a punch shot that rolls onto the green is a solid play here.  If you go too far right of the green, there are some deep pot bunkers that come into play.

However, the best par 3 on the course is easily the 13th hole.  Playing at 152 from the back tees, this is as close to an island green as you can get when playing this course.  Water surrounds the green on 3 sides and provides for a knee-buckling tee shot.  The green is severely undulated so depending on where the flag is located, you may receive a nice role towards the hole if you land your ball in the correct area.

The 17th hole at Augusta is one of the toughest par 5’s in Myrtle Beach.  A tree-lined fairway threatens your tee shot while a creek runs right by the green and splits the fairway in two.  The approach shot wouldn’t be all that dissimilar to the tee shot you would face on the 12th hole at Augusta National. Making par or better on this 531 yard par 5 is a solid score.

From the 1st hole to the last, Prestwick will offer every player numerous challenges and in some instances, numerous breaks.  The undulation of the course can work against you or for you depending on how you play the course.  With new TifEagle greens, Prestwick is obviously one of our favorites courses along the Grand Strand.  It’s well worth an addition to your next golf vacation here in Myrtle Beach.
